KC Man in Independence Robbery Charged in Fatal Shooting of His Accomplice

A Kansas City man who admitted to taking part in Independence robbery has been charged in the fatal shooting of his accomplice, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today. Antonio D. Johnson faces Murder 2nd Degree, Attempted Robbery 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.

A second accomplice in the Independence robbery early Thursday has also been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Elijah Lockhart during the robbery attempt. Andre D. Mays Jr. faces Murder 2nd Degree, Attempted Robbery 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.

According to court records filed Friday, Independence police officers responded early Thursday morning, April 28, 2021, to the 500 block of S. Crescent in Independence and determined that the defendant had attempted a home invasion robbery with another man, the victim of the fatal shooting, Elijah Lockhart. The defendant and victim were confronted at the residence and when the victim pointed at a weapon at a man inside the residence, several shots were fired at the victim. The defendant ran away from the residence and was later taken into custody. Lockhart was found deceased in the street, a few doors away from the crime scene. The defendant told police he and his accomplice planned on robbing those at the residence when a confrontation occurred and someone began firing shots.

Prosecutors requested a $150,000 bond.
