Independence Police Announce Retirement of Officer

IPD released the following retirement announcement:

Officer Canterbury Retirement Notification

“Officer Josh Canterbury retires after 25 years of service. Officer Canterbury began his law enforcement career with the Independence Police Department when he was commissioned in September of 1996. Prior to that, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Missouri Western State College and attended the Eastern Jackson County Regional Police Academy.Aside from serving for three years in the Community Services Unit as a School Resource Officer and in the Bicycle Unit, Officer Canterbury primarily spent his career in the Patrol Division. Most notably, Officer Canterbury served for twenty years as a Field Training Officer mentoring and developing many recruits into successful police officers. In his twenty five years at IPD, Officer Canterbury has received 31 documented letters of commendation, recognition and appreciation. He was also recognized as the police department’s Officer of the Month in January of 2008 for his arrest of three armed robbery suspects. He also received a Life Saving Award for providing successful CPR to a citizen.We wish Officer Canterbury well in his future endeavors and thank him for his many years of faithful service to this community.“
