Here is a statement from the Independence Police Department regarding the retirement of officer Officer Rodney Johnson:
“Officer Rodney Johnson retires effective today, June 17, 2021, after 25 years of service as a police officer with the Independence Police Department. Officer Johnson was hired by IPD in September of 1996, after already serving for five years as a police officer with the Kansas City, MO Police Department. He was also enlisted in the US Army Reserve from 1984 until he retired in 2007.Officer Johnson was assigned to the Patrol Division for the entirety of his career at IPD. While serving as a patrol officer, Officer Johnson also served on the Bomb Squad (EOD) as a bomb technician from 2007 to 2014. He was a frequent presenter at the Citizens Police Academy, displaying the equipment and explaining the role of the Bomb Squad. Officer Johnson has received 11 Letters of Commendation, eight Letters of Recognition and 13 Letters of Appreciation. Officer Johnson was also recognized as the Officer of the Month in November of 2007 for his actions during a Robbery. We wish Officer Johnson well in his future endeavors and thank him for his many years of faithful service to this community.“
